Following the opening of Woolwich Waves, Digital Greenwich Connect has confirmed it is providing the core connectivity that enables the state-of-the-art leisure centre to operate as a truly modern, smart and inclusive public facility.

Digital Greenwich Connect is the joint venture between DG Cities, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Innovation Company, and full fibre provider ITS.

From lifts and building management systems to fast public WiFi, office connectivity and operational services, Digital Greenwich Connect, working with its regional partner Enlink, has ensured that Woolwich Waves is powered by a resilient, high-capacity digital network designed to support both day-one operations and future innovation.

Delivered by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and operated by GLL with investment from Sport England, Woolwich Waves is one of the most ambitious leisure developments in the UK. Behind the scenes, Digital Greenwich Connect has ensured the building’s digital foundations match its mightily impressive architectural, sustainability and community credentials.

The full fibre infrastructure supports:

  • Critical building systems, including lifts and environmental controls
  • Secure operational connectivity for staff, offices and partners
  • High-quality public WiFi for visitors across the centre
  • Future-ready capacity to enable smart building technologies, data-driven services and new digital experiences over time

By embedding robust digital infrastructure at the heart of the project, the joint venture ensures Woolwich Waves can evolve as community needs change – without costly retrofits or disruption.

A council spokesperson said: “Woolwich Waves is a landmark, state-of-the-art building for our borough – not just because of its top-class facilities that are truly accessible and inclusive for our residents, but because of the infrastructure that sits behind it. Digital connectivity is now as fundamental for buildings as power or water, and through Digital Greenwich Connect this facility is now capable of operating, adapting and serving our community for generations to come.”

Daren Baythorpe, CEO of ITS, said:

“Woolwich Waves is a great example of why digital infrastructure must be considered from the very start of major developments. Our network is running the systems that keep the building moving, connected and accessible every single day – from lifts and building management to WiFi and office connectivity. This is what full fibre-enabled public infrastructure looks like in practice: resilient, invisible, and absolutely essential.”

Peter Bundey, CEO of GLL said:

“GLL is proud of our long and strong partnership with The Royal Borough of Greenwich across leisure and culture. Now, visitors to Woolwich Waves will benefit from high speed digital connections to power up their workout or simply stay connected ‘on the go’.

“Digital Greenwich Connect’s network will also support our daily management of operations, providing an efficient and high quality service to the many people we look forwarding to welcoming in the future.”

Woolwich Waves forms part of a wider regeneration programme in Woolwich town centre, alongside the refurbished Tramshed Theatre and future residential, retail and public realm developments.

Digital Greenwich Connect’s role is to ensure these places are not only physically connected, but digitally enabled – supporting footfall, operational efficiency, accessibility and long-term economic growth.

As public buildings increasingly rely on digital systems to deliver inclusive, efficient and sustainable services, Woolwich Waves sets a benchmark for how councils, operators and digital infrastructure partners can work together to deliver future-ready community assets.
